Create a Red Velvet Rope Policy

Who would be an ideal person to work with you and what would the traits of that person be if you could wave a magic wand? And in the current environment, we know we can’t wave magic wands, but this is why it is so important for us to get clear on who the ideal team member would be. The ideal team member starts off by creating a red velvet role policy.

Okay? So this exercise is not a heavy one. You should, well get it done in less than 10 minutes. So as you go through, stop me here, pause me as you answer the questions. We are looking for the characteristics. What type of people do you and your current team really enjoy working with? Like, what are the characteristics of your favorite team members?

What are the characteristics of the favorite team members you’ve had in the past? Who are the people that you’ve worked with that that’s the type of person you wanna work with? So we start with the characteristics. Write down the names of some of your existing or past ID and t members. Jot them out because we really want to visualize those people and see them and see them in action so that we can identify what is it about them that makes them ideal.

That’s our next question. What is it about them that you enjoy, but have the names. See the people don’t do this generically without faces. Do this with real people that you’ve in, you’ve, you’ve, you’ve, you’ve enjoyed working with. Now there’s the type of people you want to work with. And equally as important as the people you don’t want to work with,

write down some of the names of your existing or past team members that you no longer want to work with. And what are the characteristics? Do you know? Are, are, are they impolite? Are they rude? Are they aggressive? Are they, are they lazy? Are they, do they not communicate very well? Are they of a closed mindset?

Are they cranky? Are they lacking in energy? What is it that you don’t like about people? Because this is the type of person we want. These are the characteristics we don’t want, we’ve got to get clear on this so we can attract the right people. And when we meet them, that we can identify them and know, this one’s a keeper.

So those people that you don’t like, what is it about them you don’t enjoy? Are what makes them difficult to work with? Again, go back into the past. What type of places you know has your ideal member worked previously, and what characteristics have they developed there? So now we know what we want, we know what we don’t want, and then we’re going to go and look at,

okay, well what’s the likely training or career path that this person has had? How many years experience or what type of experiences our ideal team member got? What personality traits or attributes we’re really beginning to land a plane. Now what, what is it about this person? What, what do we need to be able to say about them before we take them on educational standards?

An ideal team member, you know, what’s the minimum educational path you see? Cause we’ve got, this is what we like, this is what we don’t like. This is the characteristics and the trades. This is the red valve road policy. If people don’t meet these characteristics, well, we don’t wanna work with them. No, I know it’s scary,

but there’s a lot of firms out there now at the moment who have non ideal people who don’t meet this Red Vel Road policy working in their businesses. And we’re saying, well, we, we can’t let them go cause they’re better than nothing. I, I’m not so sure non-negotiables. What are the characteristics of traits that we just will not accept in our people?

So now what we want to do is we wanna take the answers to those paying questions and based on the answer to those paying questions to begin to jot out here is what is our team? Red Velvet Rope policy? What is your team Red Velvet rope policy? Don’t get caught up in thinking about, oh no, who needs to go, how have I done this wrong in the past?

Don’t get caught up in that. I’m not asking you to fire anybody. I’m not asking you to hire anybody. But what I am asking you to do is that you and I are crystal clear and the minimum standard that you ideally want in your people that are working with you in your business.
